Introduction
Concor Construction invites suitably qualified candidates to apply for the position of Senior Accountant. The successful incumbent will report to the Divisional Finance Manager within the Infrastructure division. The successful incumbent’s key role is financial analysis, risk management, and reporting project performance on complex civil and electrical construction projects. The role involves ensuring that the projects remain financially viable, within budget, and compliant with accounting standards, construction contracting, regulations, and tax. You will also collaborate with other departments to ensure accurate budgeting and forecasting processes. Preference will be given to Employment Equity candidates, including disabled applicants. This position is site-based and is situated within the Northern Cape. The successful candidate will be based on site and will be required to travel between projects in the De Aar and Sutherland areas.
Job description

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for (but not limited to):

  • Cost Management and Reporting:
    • Develop, implement, and maintain project cost control systems and procedures.
    • Ensure cost codes align with project activities and reporting structures
    • Recommend corrective actions to keep costs within budget.
    • Prepare monthly cost reports, including variance analysis and forecast-to-complete.
    • Produce a cash flow forecast based on progress and expected inflows and outflows
    • Prepare monthly financial reports (Income Statement, Balance Sheet, required reconciliations, etc) for the projects.
    • Assist with any other ad hoc tasks 
  • Budgeting and Forecasting:
    • Assist in developing project budgets during the tender and execution phases.
    • Monitor actual project expenditures against budgets and forecasts, identify variances, and investigate discrepancies.
    • Support ongoing forecasting of the project based on changes, delays, or scope modifications
    • Analyze trends and historical data to improve the accuracy of future estimates.
  • Change Management and Variations:
    • Track and analyze change orders and variations.
    • Evaluate the cost impact of scope changes and delays.
    • Work with contracts/ commercial teams on cost implications of claims and disputes – incorporate approved changes into the cost reports. 
  • Risk Analysis and Mitigation:
    • Identify financial risks and provide input on potential mitigation strategies.
    • Assist with scenario planning and risk-based forecasting models.
    • Track and analyze change orders and variations.
    • Evaluate the cost impact of scope changes and delays. 
  • Compliance and Internal Controls:
    • Ensure compliance with internal financial controls, policies, and procedures.
    • Support internal and external audits with appropriate documentation.
    • Ensure compliance with project-specific financial and contractual obligations.
  • Collaboration and Coordination:
    • Liaise with the Project Manager, Site Engineers, Procurement, Quantity Surveyors, Finance Teams, etc to collect and verify project data. 
    • Attend project meetings and provide financial insights for decision-making.
  • System and Data Management:
    • Maintain accurate and updated data in project accounting software.
    • Automate reporting and data integration, where possible.
    • Develop custom reports and dashboards for senior management as needed.
  • Leadership and Mentorship:
    • Supervise and mentor junior cost/ accounting staff.
    • Lead initiatives to improve financial reporting processes and cost control practices.

Minimum requirements

Qualifications

  • BCom Accounting Honours Degree; or
  • BCom Hons: Management Accounting (CIMA)
  • Professional membership would be advantageous

Experience

  • A minimum of 6 years' accounting or finance experience within the construction, engineering, or related industry
  • Minimum 3 years' cost accounting experience 
  • Must have worked on large-scale infrastructure or construction projects
Knowledge and Skills
  • Advanced knowledge in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word & Outlook)
  • Proficiency in accounting and cost control software 
  • Ability to prepare financial reports and give recommendations based on available data
  • Strong financial analysis skills
  • Knowledge of construction contracts is preferred 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong ability to prioritize and work well under pressure to meet established deadlines
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Must have a valid driver's license and must be willing to travel
