Introduction
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Chief Executive Officer is responsible for the overall direction of Concor Construction, and for achieving its financial and other strategic objectives on a sustainable basis over the immediate, medium and long term. In addition, he/she coordinates the efforts of the operating platform executives and other senior executives, and works with them and the Board of Directors to develop and successfully implement the Company’s business plan and policies.
The ideal candidate for this position has outstanding business acumen and a proven track record of successful construction business leadership.
Preference will be given to employment equity candidates, but all applications are welcome.
Job description
- Develop and oversee the successful implementation of the Company’s strategy, values and operational business plans and budgets that achieve the Company’s financial and other strategic objectives over the immediate, medium and long term.
- Supported by the CFO, ensure optimum balance sheet, capital structure, cash management and overhead structure for the Company, that enables the implementation of the Company’s strategy and business plans.
- Guide new business development processes that successfully engage clients and partners, and positively impacts on securing a profitable project pipeline that is aligned with the financial plan of the Company.
- Lead the implementation of transformation initiatives that energise, align and diversify the Company, in order to bring about enhanced organisational effectiveness.
- Ensure the effective management of all stakeholders, and build quality personal relationships with key clients, financial institutions and other key stakeholders; and serve as the chief link between management and the Board of Directors.
- Support the creation and development of a competent, high-performing and delivery orientated Company executive committee, and other teams across the Company.
- Ensure high-level oversight of the day-to-day management of the Company, and its various operations, to ensure they deliver results in compliance with the business plans, policies, values and code of conduct of the Group, as well as the relevant regulatory framework.
Minimum requirements
Qualifications
- A tertiary qualification in civil engineering or other relevant built environment discipline
- Professional registration with ECSA, SACPCMP or other relevant international body
- A relevant post graduate qualification would be an advantage
Experience
- A minimum of 12 years’ successful business leadership experience, primarily in the construction contracting industry.
- Experience in a senior leadership role as the accountable chief executive officer, managing director or business unit leader.
- Experience as a board director of a private commercial business.
- Experience in successfully bidding for major infrastructure projects that require the cooperation of multiple stakeholders.
- Experience in organisational improvement, or turnaround activities, would be an advantage.
Knowledge
- Sound knowledge of the construction contracting industry, including the competition, the suppliers, the client base and the regulatory environment. Understanding of the opencast mining industry would be an advantage.
- Sound knowledge of corporate governance and general management best practices.
- Sound knowledge of financial management, including accounting, auditing and cash management.
- Working knowledge of capital markets and related institutions

- Ability to develop a long-term strategic business plan that enables the achievement of the Company’s business and organisational objectives in a sustainable manner.
- Proven ability and experience in developing and maintaining business opportunities in both the private and public sectors.
- Ability to raise capital with established banks and development finance institutions
- Transformation leadership skills to energise and align the entire Company, move it in new directions, enhance diversity and capabilities of people, in order to bring about an improvement of business results.
- An ability to build relationships and influence shareholders, clients, financial institutions and other stakeholders for positive impact on business performance.
- The aptitude to develop high-performing teams that deliver, amongst direct reports and across the Company.
- A capability to manage across a range of operational platforms and Southern Africa geographies.
- An ability to exercise sound judgment based on a high level of integrity and sound ethical behaviour.
- Strong ability to organise effectively, and to prioritise and work well under pressure to meet deadlines in a dependable manner.
