Introduction
Concor Construction invites suitably qualified candidates to apply for the position of Plant Accountant. The successful candidate will be employed within the Plant department. The incumbent will report directly to the Senior Plant Accountant.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the financial processing, finance administration, financial accounting functions, and fixed asset management for the division.
Preference will be given to Employment Equity candidates, including disabled applicants. This position is based at Amalgam, Johannesburg, and is a permanent role.
Job description
Among other things, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following:
- Maintains accounts to produce and provide timely and accurate accounting information.
- Review the monthly balance sheet reconciliation.
- Prepare and manage budgets and forecasts.
- Performs and monitors all expenditures, journal and ledger entries, bank statements, account activity, and other accounting and financial records.
- Prepares asset, liability, and capital account entries by compiling and analyzing account information.
- Recommends financial actions by analyzing accounting options.
- Summarizes current financial status by collecting information; preparing balance sheet, profit and loss statement, and other reports.
- Substantiates financial transactions by auditing documents.
- Maintains accounting controls by preparing and recommending policies and procedures.
- Maintains financial security by following internal controls.
- Reviewing and processing journals, plant hours, and procurement requisitions in JDE. Check monthly financial reports for accuracy and correctness.
- Liaison between head office, sites, and suppliers.
- Prepares payments by verifying documentation and requesting disbursements.
- Prepares special financial reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing account information and trends.
- Prepares and/or exercises control over the preparation of financial statements, estimates, summaries, financial analyses, management reports, and cost control reports for expense or funding problems.
- Ensure petty cash returns are in compliance with company policy and liaise with the site on queries. Assistance to the buying department with procurement and credit applications.
- Prepare cash flow reports
- Deal with finance-related queries when needed.
- Provides information and liaises with internal & external auditors.
- Enforce and ensure compliance with all company policies and procedures (i.e., procurement, petty cash, etc.)
Fixed Asset management:
- Regularly coordinate with the site managers to ensure that assets are adequately verified/transferred as per the agreed verification process.
- Travel to the regional offices from time to time to ascertain the internal controls around fixed assets
- Regularly review the Asset Management to ensure that it remains relevant for the organisation
- Ensure that the monthly fixed asset transactions are correctly and adequately recorded.
- Ensure that the monthly fixed asset register is correct, up to date, and ties to the general ledger.
- Manage Insurance cost/ recovery to ensure that fixed assets are adequately covered. Ensure that the fixed assets for all projects are properly transferred, disposed in accordance with policies and procedures.
- Ensure that disposals and write of assets are correctly treated according to Accounting Standards.
- Support the Head of Finance in implementing the annual asset management plan, including the verification process.
- Participate in the assessment, development, and facilitation of financial literacy, reporting, monitoring, and related internal controls of fixed assets.
Minimum requirements
Qualifications
- B.Com Accounting Degree
Experience
- Minimum 5 years’ financial accounting experience
- Minimum 5 years’ experience with any accounting computer software package
- Experience in managing a finance and administration function
- Experience with general ledger functions and the month-end/year-end close process
- Experience with creating financial statements and completion of tax calculations and tax returns
- Strong technical expertise and proven track record in fixed assets management
- Previous financial and management experience in the Construction, Engineering, or Mining industry would be advantageous
- Strong technical expertise and proven track record in fixed assets management
- Conversant in the JDE operating system would be an advantage
Knowledge and Skills
- Excellent financial reporting skills
- Excellent knowledge of basic accounting procedures, principles, and reporting standards
- Advanced knowledge in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word & Outlook)
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Well-experienced in reconciliation
- Strong ability to prioritize and work well under pressure to meet established deadlines
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Attention to detail
- Work independently as well as part of a team
