Job description
The successful candidate will be accountable for, but not limited to, the following key outputs:
Quality Assurance
- Implement, monitor, and support the Project Quality Management Plan, QMS requirements, quality procedures, Method Statements, Inspection and Test Plans, and contractual quality requirements.
- Verify that manufacturing and fabrication activities comply with approved drawings, specifications, client requirements, applicable standards, and project quality objectives.
- Conduct quality audits, surveillance inspections, process checks, calibration verification, and routine compliance monitoring.
- Maintain accurate quality records to support inspections, audits, MRBs, Quality Data Books, and final project handover.
Welding Quality Control
- Verify welding activities against approved WPS, PQRs, welding codes, specifications, client requirements, and acceptance criteria.
- Inspect joint preparation, fit-up, alignment, weld quality, dimensions, workmanship, weld repairs, and final welded assemblies.
- Confirm welder qualifications, welding parameters, consumable control, preheat/interpass requirements, PWHT requirements, and related controls where applicable.
- Coordinate and review NDT activities, weld maps, welding logs, repair records, NDT reports, NCRs, and welding quality records.
Fabrication Inspection
- Conduct dimensional and fabrication inspections covering material preparation, cutting, drilling, machining, fit-up, assembly, final fabrication, and structural steel components.
- Verify material identification, certification, storage, and traceability from receipt through fabrication, inspection, and dispatch.
- Monitor surface preparation, blasting, coating, preservation, bolted connections, hold points, and product release requirements where applicable.
- Identify, report, and verify close-out of fabrication non-conformances before product acceptance.
Inspection, Testing and Verification
- Perform and coordinate hold point, witness point, surveillance, client, third-party, and final acceptance inspections in line with approved ITPs and project requirements.
- Review inspection reports, test results, MTCs, calibration certificates, manufacturer documentation, and supporting quality records.
- Confirm that inspections, testing, corrective actions, and verification activities are complete before product release or progression to the next stage.
Quality Documentation and Record Management
- Prepare, review, control, and maintain quality documentation, including inspection reports, weld maps, MTCs, WQRs, WPSs, PQRs, NDT reports, dimensional reports, coating records, heat treatment records, and calibration certificates.
- Maintain complete material identification, traceability, documentation control, and contractual quality records.
- Compile, verify, and finalise MRBs, Quality Data Books, Quality Dossiers, and client handover documentation.
Archive Documentation Recovery and Data Book Close-out
- Recover, review, reconcile, and verify archived and current quality records from electronic systems, hard-copy archives, manufacturing files, and legacy project documentation.
- Identify missing manufacturing, welding, inspection, testing, material traceability, and quality records, and coordinate recovery with relevant project teams.
- Maintain tracking registers for outstanding documentation, record recovery, non-conformances, and project close-out milestones.
- Ensure final quality records are complete, accurate, traceable, audit-ready, accepted, and formally archived for project handover.
Non-Conformance and Corrective Action Management
- Identify, report, investigate, and monitor non-conformances, concessions, deviations, and quality issues through the NCR process.
- Support root cause analysis, CAPA development, corrective action implementation, verification, and formal close-out.
- Maintain NCR/CAPA registers, analyse trends, and provide quality performance updates to support continuous improvement and project decision-making.
Planning and Reporting
- Maintain tracking registers and provide progress reports on MRBs, Quality Data Books, documentation recovery, inspections, quality risks, KPIs, and project close-out activities.
- Coordinate with Engineering, Fabrication, Procurement, Quality, Document Control, and Project Management to resolve documentation issues and support milestone achievement.
- Monitor progress against quality deliverables and recommend recovery actions where delays or risks are identified.
Client and Stakeholder Liaison
- Coordinate client inspections, audits, surveillance visits, witness points, final acceptance inspections, and third-party inspection activities.
- Attend quality, production, and progress meetings, provide technical quality input, and respond to client queries, findings, and documentation requirements.
- Maintain effective relationships with clients, consulting engineers, subcontractors, suppliers, inspectors, and internal project teams to support compliant project delivery and close-out.
Health, Safety and Environmental Compliance
- Conduct all inspection and QA/QC activities in line with project HSE requirements, company policies, safe work practices, and applicable legislation.
- Identify and report unsafe conditions, quality risks, and workplace hazards, and participate in toolbox talks, risk assessments, safety meetings, and incident investigations where required.
- Support Zero Harm, safe inspection planning, corrective actions, and continuous HSE improvement.
The successful candidate will be a technically strong, quality-focused QA/QC professional who can combine hands-on inspection capability with disciplined documentation close-out and effective stakeholder engagement.
Minimum requirements
Qualifications
- National Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Welding Engineering, or a related technical field
- SAIW Level 1 Welding Inspector (minimum).
- Valid SAIW certification
- Must have a valid driver's license
Advantageous
- SAIW Level 2 Welding Inspector.
- CSWIP 3.1 Welding Inspector.
- Lead Auditor qualification.
- NACE or FROSIO coating inspection qualification.
- Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Level II certification (UT, MT, PT or VT).
Experience
- Minimum 5 years’ QA/QC experience in heavy steel fabrication, structural steel manufacturing, engineering, or related project environments.
- Experience on bridge manufacturing, structural steel, mining, engineering, or large-scale fabrication projects will be advantageous.
- Proven experience in welding inspection, fabrication inspection, dimensional verification, NDT coordination, and quality control documentation.
- Strong background in ISO 3834 welding/fabrication environments, Inspection and Test Plans, client inspections, audits, MRBs, Quality Data Books, and final handover documentation.
- Ability to recover, verify, reconcile, and close out archived and current quality records, including material traceability and manufacturing compliance documentation.
Knowledge and Skills
- Good working knowledge of ISO 3834 Quality Requirements for Fusion Welding of Metallic Materials.
- Good working knowledge of ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems.
- Strong knowledge of structural steel fabrication, bridge manufacturing, fabrication tolerances, material traceability, dimensional inspection, and technical drawing interpretation.
- Thorough understanding of welding processes, WPS, PQR, WQR, welding quality requirements, NDT coordination, inspection records, and acceptance criteria.
- Sound understanding of QMS, ISO 3834, ISO 9001:2015, Quality Plans, ITPs, NCRs, CAPA, quality reporting, and project close-out requirements.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and electronic document management systems
