Introduction
Concor Infrastructure is looking to employ a suitably qualified and experienced candidate as a Steel Fabricator Trial Assembly Manager.
The Steel Fabricator Trial Assembly Manager oversees the temporary pre‑assembly, fit‑up, and dimensional verification of large, fabricated steel components within the workshop or trial assembly yard. This role acts as a critical link between engineering, fabrication, and site erection teams. By ensuring precise joint alignment, geometry, and tolerances, you will prevent clashes, reduce rework, and secure first‑time‑right installation on site.
Preference will be given to suitably qualified Employment Equity candidates.
Job description
Successful candidates will be responsible for (but not limited to):
- Trial Assembly Planning: Develop and execute detailed trial assembly layouts, sequencing, and staging plans aligned with structural drawings and erection methodologies.
- Dimensional Control & Quality Assurance: Lead dimensional inspections and quality control hold points to ensure fabricated steel meets strict engineering tolerances, specifications, and codes.
- Fit‑Up Coordination & Technical Problem Solving: Work closely with fabrication teams to resolve fit‑up issues, welding distortions, geometry deviations, and drawing discrepancies.
- Resource & Space Management: Coordinate the efficient use of workshop/yard space, cranes, forklifts, rigging equipment, and personnel for assembly and dismantling activities.
- Documentation & Reporting: Prepare dimensional inspection reports, non-conformance reports (NCRs), deviation logs, and photographic documentation for internal and client sign‑off.
- Erection & Safety Planning: Collaborate with field erection teams to ensure assemblies are broken down effectively for transport and erected safely onsite.
- HSE Compliance: Enforce strict health, safety, and environmental standards during all heavy lifting, rigging, and working‑at‑height operations.
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPIs)
- Zero major clashes or modifications required during final site erection, demonstrating accuracy of trial assembly and dimensional control.
- On‑time completion of all trial assembly activities in accordance with project schedules and fabrication milestones.
- Reduction in material wastage and fabrication rework, supported by accurate fit‑up, early detection of deviations, and effective problem‑solving.
- Zero Lost Time Injuries (LTI) during all assembly, lifting, rigging, and working‑at‑height operations, reflecting strong safety leadership.
Minimum requirements
Qualifications

- Relevant Trade Certificate (Red Seal / Mer SETA certified)
OR
- National Diploma or Degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering or Fabrication
- Welding certifications to recognised standards (e.g., AWS, EN) is advantageous
- NDT (Non‑Destructive Testing) inspection certification is advantageous
Experience
- Minimum 5 years’ hands‑on experience in heavy structural steel fabrication, fitting, and on‑site erection.
- Proven supervisory or management experience within a fabrication or construction environment is strongly preferred.
Knowledge and Skills
- Advanced proficiency in reading and interpreting complex engineering drawings, fabrication details, and 3D models.
