Concor Infrastructure invites suitably qualified, technically competent, and delivery-focused candidates to apply for the position of Mechanical Engineer – Fabrication and Welding on a limited duration contract linked to the Msikaba Bridge Project. The Mechanical Engineer will provide hands-on engineering support to workshop-based structural steel fabrication and welding activities, ensuring that all work is executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with contract specifications, approved drawings, applicable codes and standards, project quality requirements, and production deliverables. This role requires a practical engineering professional who can bridge the gap between design intent, fabrication execution, welding compliance, quality assurance, production planning, and technical problem-solving in a complex project environment. Job description

The successful candidate will be accountable for, but not limited to, the following key outputs:

Engineering and Technical Support

  • Interpret and apply contract specifications, engineering drawings, design requirements, and project standards to fabrication processes.
  • Review technical documentation to ensure fabrication activities comply with contractual and engineering requirements.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to workshop personnel on fabrication and welding-related matters.
  • Identify and resolve technical issues that may impact fabrication quality, productivity, or project schedules.
  • Support engineering reviews and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the fabrication environment.
  •  Translate engineering requirements into practical workshop instructions and ensure technical information is communicated clearly to relevant teams. 

Fabrication Planning and Works Preparation

  • Develop, review, and maintain fabrication work packs and supporting technical documentation.
  • Prepare, review, and update method statements for fabrication and welding activities.
  • Define fabrication sequences and process plans to optimise workflow, productivity, quality, and safety.
  • Support production planning by ensuring technical readiness for fabrication activities.
  • Monitor fabrication readiness by tracking drawings, materials, consumables, procedures, inspection requirements, and resource constraints.
  • Assist in identifying schedule risks, technical bottlenecks, and production constraints, and recommend corrective actions to support project milestones. 

Welding Engineering and Compliance

  • Support the implementation and maintenance of welding procedures and associated documentation.
  • Assist with welding procedure qualification activities and compliance requirements.
  • Ensure fabrication activities comply with applicable welding codes, standards, and project specifications.
  • Support welding certification requirements and maintain relevant compliance records.
  • Liaise with Quality Control personnel to address welding-related quality concerns and corrective actions.
  • Verify that weld maps, welding records, welder qualifications, consumable controls, and inspection requirements are maintained in line with project requirements. 

Quality Assurance and Technical Compliance

  • Prepare and verify technical compliance reports.
  • Ensure compliance with project specifications, quality plans, inspection and test plans, and applicable industry standards.
  • Participate in quality inspections, audits, and technical reviews.
  • Investigate non-conformances and assist in implementing corrective and preventive actions.
  • Support document control processes related to engineering and quality records.
  • Contribute to the preparation of fabrication data books, technical handover documentation, and quality close-out records. 

Stakeholder Management and Reporting

  • Engage effectively with project teams, production personnel, quality departments, clients, consultants, and subcontractors.
  • Prepare technical reports, engineering correspondence, and progress updates as required.
  • Attend project meetings and provide technical input to support project objectives and delivery milestones.
  • Promote collaboration across engineering, production, quality, and project management functions.
  • Escalate critical technical, quality, safety, or delivery risks timeously to enable informed decision-making and effective project control.

Health, Safety, Environmental, and Project Governance

  • Support safe fabrication and welding practices by ensuring engineering input aligns with approved procedures, risk controls, and project requirements.
  • Promote compliance with company policies, project governance requirements, quality procedures, and applicable statutory obligations.Participate in toolbox discussions, technical risk reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives where required.

 

 

 

Minimum requirements

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in Mechanical Engineering; or
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSc Eng) in Mechanical Engineering; or
  • Bachelor of Engineering Technology (BEng Tech) in Mechanical Engineering coupled with significant structural steel fabrication experience.
  • Professional registration or candidacy with the Engineering Council of South Africa or another recognised engineering body will be advantageous.

Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years' experience within a structural steel fabrication environment.
  • Experience in fabrication planning, works preparation, and manufacturing support.
  • Experience in welding applications and fabrication quality control will be advantageous.
  • Exposure to coded fabrication environments and standards such as AWS, ASME, ISO, or equivalent.
  • Experience supporting large-scale infrastructure, bridge, mining, industrial, or heavy engineering projects will be advantageous.
  • Experience working with inspection and test plans, quality records, welding documentation, and technical close-out packs will be advantageous.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a workshop or site-based project environment with competing priorities and strict delivery timelines.

Technical Competencies

  • Strong understanding of structural steel fabrication processes and practices.
  • Knowledge of welding processes, welding procedures, and fabrication quality requirements.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, fabrication details, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Understanding of fabrication standards, welding codes, and quality management systems.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel proficiency.
  • Strong technical report-writing and document management skills.
  • Ability to compile, review, and control fabrication data books, method statements, work packs, and technical registers.
  • Sound understanding of health, safety, environmental, and quality expectations within fabrication and construction environments.
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing and quality assurance principles.
