Job description
The successful candidate will be accountable for, but not limited to, the following key outputs:
Material Control and Handling
- Receive, inspect, verify, identify, store, preserve, and issue materials in line with project procedures, approved specifications, work packs, nesting schedules, and fabrication priorities.
- Check certificates, heat numbers, grades, dimensions, quantities, purchase orders, and delivery documents to ensure material compliance and traceability.
- Coordinate safe material handling and movement within the workshop to prevent damage, deterioration, loss, or loss of traceability.
- Maintain accurate material registers, issue records, stock balances, traceability records, and inventory documentation.
- Monitor material availability, report shortages or discrepancies, and assist with stock counts, reconciliations, and audits.
Production Support and Nesting
- Confirm material availability, allocate correct grades and plate sizes, and ensure materials are ready for planned fabrication activities.
- Coordinate with Planning and Production to optimise material use, reduce waste, and support manufacturing schedules.
- Control offcuts and reusable materials by ensuring correct identification, recording, and return to stock where applicable.
Material Verification and Traceability
- Verify that materials issued for fabrication comply with approved drawings, specifications, client requirements, and quality procedures.
- Maintain traceability from receipt through cutting, fabrication, assembly, and final completion.
- Support QA/QC during inspections, audits, client witness activities, MRBs, Quality Data Books, and handover documentation.
- Identify and report discrepancies, damaged materials, incorrect certifications, or non-conforming products, and support corrective actions.
Health, Safety and Environmental Compliance
- Perform material handling and control activities in accordance with project HSE requirements, company policies, and applicable legislation.
- Promote safe work practices during workshop activities, including lifting operations, material handling, access, hot work interfaces, and related hazards.
- Report unsafe conditions, participate in toolbox talks and risk assessments, and support corrective actions arising from audits, inspections, or incidents.
- Support the organisation’s commitment to Zero Harm, continuous safety improvement, and compliance with statutory, client, and project HSE requirements.
The successful candidate will be organised, accurate, safety-conscious, and able to work effectively in a fast-paced structural steel manufacturing environment.
Minimum requirements
Qualifications
- Grade 12 (Matric).
- Relevant qualification in Logistics, Supply Chain, Production, Materials Management, Engineering, or a related technical field will be highly advantageous.
- Must have a valid driver’s licence.
Advantageous
- Structural steel fabrication, bridge manufacturing, CNC plate cutting, nesting, steel plate or section control, welding consumables, ERP systems, and Manufacturing Record Book support.
- Forklift and/or overhead crane certification.
- Training or experience in ISO 9001, QA/QC documentation, or material traceability systems.
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in material control, stores, warehouse, workshop logistics, or inventory control within a manufacturing, fabrication, or heavy engineering environment.
- Experience in material receiving, issuing, identification, traceability, stock records, registers, and inventory systems.
- Experience working with engineering drawings, material specifications, BOMs, and production material requirements.
- Experience coordinating material movements to support planned production activities.
- Computer literacy with proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook.
Knowledge & Skills
- Knowledge of material control, stock management, warehouse processes, and workshop logistics.
- Understanding of material traceability requirements, including heat numbers, material grades, certificates, and issue records.
- Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, material schedules, BOMs, cutting lists, and nesting requirements.
- Knowledge of structural steel materials, plate and section identification, storage, handling, preservation, and issuing processes.
- Understanding of QA/QC documentation requirements, including material certificates, inspection records, MRBs, Quality Data Books, and handover records.
- Working knowledge of inventory systems, material registers, stock reconciliations, and basic ERP or warehouse management systems.
- Understanding of safe material handling, lifting operations, rigging basics, and workshop HSE requirements.
- Strong planning, coordination, communication, and problem-solving skills, with high attention to detail.
